They're... well, they're not common on my home world, but they're pretty common on other worlds like Midchilda! I'm not surprised you haven't heard of mages before.

Nope! My friends, Fate-chan and Nanoha-chan are also mages and they don't get wings. [Not to mention her guardian knights but she kind of gets the feeling mentioning the Wolkenritter would steer you back straight into 'pretty sure Hayate is something Completely Amazing and not just some kid who inherited a book'.]
