01 Water Whips .//. In which Katara wonders WTFISLIFE (Video + Action - R29)
[Katara wastes no time. She's spent too long on the move avoiding the Fire Nation to get caught dilly dallying in a strange new place. The houses are strange, the woman that claimed to be her mother was strange, way too much of a throwback to Ju Dee, that creepy woman. As soon as she's been locked out of the house and the lights go off she turns to half stare, half glare at the door, then looks around. It's pouring down out there! Even so there sure are a lot of people out and about given the hour, and plenty of them look equally confused. Most of them are wearing clothes she doesn't even recognize-- not that she's exactly blending in herself. Right then she's grateful for the familiarity of the blues she has on. Just, where exactly are the others?]

How did I get from there to here? I don't remember going to sleep...

[She shoulders the bag for a moment, then debates asking someone for some help. Is there a point? Damn it, is this what happened to Aang?!

In the end she opted to head in the direction some others were, because A: This is when she's noticed the music that is coming from everywhere and no where at once, B: She really wants to get the heck away from that dark and thus now creepy house where that creepy woman is hiding behind the door-- as if she might change her mind and try dragging Katara's soul back inside, and C: She thinks if that's the way everyone is headed then if the others are there that would be the best place to catch them as they're leaving. She steps out and immediately moves her arm to bend the water off of her head only to realize that she's still getting soaked and she can't feel the pull. For a moment she stands frozen, eyes going wide. What's going on?]

[Forty-five minutes later.

Katara is huddled under a tree looking a bit pale. She had taken to looking through her bag with an unreadable expression, but a bit of curiosity. There was a box of food, some strange red balls, clothes, a book, some bottles marked in characters she didn't recognize but could somehow read anyway, something that looked like it was supposed to resemble currency, and her Pokegear. She's started in on the book first because Katara is a logical cookie. Books usually provide useful information, after all. It's indeed very informative. Next is the Pokegear. Though her patience with the situation is shaken because of her unease she's definitely not hesitating to try this strange little device. It's made of material she's never seen before, but soon enough with the help of the book she manages to figure out how to make a video (Though ask her what that is and I guarantee she can't tell you. All she knows is the book says it's a way to communicate with others.).]

Hey, is this thing really supposed to help me talk to others? It sounds fishy to me.

[Katara hangs her head as though to say she can't believe she's DOING this, but a light on it is blinking so she has to assume it's working. When she picks her head up again she tries, looking unsure but determined.]

Aang? Sokka? Toph? Suki, or Zuko? Are any of you there?!

[When she doesn't get an IMMEDIATE reply her face turns irritated red.]

... Great. I'm talking to myself. And why can't I bend...? [Finally she lets go of the button. AND WHY IS THAT DAMN MUSIC STILL FOLLOWING HER?!]

Fishy? Nah, just think of it like a cell phone.

... S'sorta the Swiss Army Knife of cell phones, really.

[She's totally unaware, of course, that all that terminology will be lost on the poor girl on the other end.]

Couple of those names sound a little familiar. Friends of yours?

[Katara startles, looking at the video feed. Unlike Tohru who is used to moving images Katara is not. So here, Heather, have an intelligent, open mouthed stare for a bit.]

Y-Yes! They're friends! Have you seen them? [What's a cell phone?]

[... Wow. Poor girl looked like someone had slapped her with a fish.]

Uh-- ... nnnoot sure.

Did the Zuko guy have a scar? I think I've talked to him. [... Not... MUCH, though, so the main thing she remembers is that scar. Alas.]

Anyway, sheesh, you look pale.

Across the left side...? Yes, that's Zuko! [The map says Route 29 is near New Bark Town, so--] Do you know where he is?

Er-- 'fraid not. Last time I talked to him-- [... Heeeeee was being held prisoner by Team Rocket. .... B-BUT THAT WAS AWHILE AGO and she's pretty sure she's seen his face pop up on the network once or twice since then so--!] was, uh, awhile ago.

[She looks a touch disappointed, but then smiles. At least she knows she's not alone, that's better than she was a few minutes ago.] That's alright, thanks. At least I know one of my friends is here. I'm Katara, by the way. If you don't mind me asking do you know how this happened?

[Sometimes that could go miles in situations like these ones.]

Hey, no prob. This place is pretty freaky at first, s'always good when someone you know is here, too.

And uh...

[She pauses, rubbing the back of her neck.] If you mean how you or anybody else got here ... no. Wish I did. Been here awhile and we STILL don't know exactly what happened.

... OH. Uh. Name's Heather! Nice t'meetcha, Katara.

[Strange name, but a nice enough girl. Katara smiles a bit.] Nice to meet you too. I don't even know where to start. You said something about a cell... phone? What is that exactly? How is it that I can see you and hear you even though you aren't here?

... You... don't know what a cell phone is?

[... Oh man. She must either be from the past, or from some world without that kinda technology...]

Have they... uh, not invented ways to communicate over long distances where you come from?

[Nope.] Well I know what a CELL is, but I've never heard of a "phone"-- [Yes. Air quotes and all.] --before. We communicate by letters, or if we need to get a message someplace faster then we use messenger hawks.

... Oh. Oh wow. [MESSENGER HAWKS?!]

Uh-- ... yeah, okay. You're a bit behind on the times then.

The 'Gear-- that thing you can see my face on?

It's a machine. It lets you talk to people from a long ways away. Like you're doing right now. I'm miles and miles from New Bark.

... Er, assuming that's where you are.

Behind on the--?! What do you mean behind on the times? [She quiets down when Heather starts to explain. Machine, wow... What Sokka probably wouldn't give to get his hands on this! Or their inventor friend whosenamekoreeforgot.] Then this Johto place... is it anywhere near the Earth Kingdom, or the Fire Nation?

[Even with the rain it's way too warm to be near the poles.]

... Earth... Kingdom?

Uh-- ... sorry. I know it sucks to hear this, but... I've never heard of either of those places. You're, uh... you're probably from a different place than me entirely.

I'm from the U.S. Y'know, uh... United States of America?

Ring any bells?

United States? Of America? [Katara gives you a light frown, as if debating how to break it to you that no, no it doesn't, but of course she doesn't need to worry how YOU'LL react-- you've been here longer. It's reflex.] I can't say that it does. This place just gets more strange by the minute, doesn't it? [Tell me sweet, sweet lies.]

[Yeah, Heather's had insult-battles with birds, talked to people from a time beyond Earth's existence, and met Merlin before he grew the enormous beard and was animated into a Disney film as a lovable old troll grandpa. She can handle someone not knowing what America is. It's kinda refreshing actually.]

Heh, just wait till you've been here awhile. The surprises just don't stop comin'.

[B) This smile. I really should have known better than to think that the surprises would ever stop after finding Aang in that ice burg. Why should here be any different?] At least tell me that there aren't any wars going on here?

[HEATHER IS INDEED PRETTY COOL when she doesn't get off on the wrong foot. Needless to say, it's probably a good thing she's endeared herself early-on.]

Yep!

I guess it might be a little tricky if you're not used to the tech, but see that yellow button with the little... uh, connecty-symbol on it? It's got a little green bulb above it that lights up.

That's the network. If you press that button, you can access all the stuff people are putting up there-- s'probably what you pressed to put this video up in the first place.

Anyway, all the people you've talked to should be stored in there so you can contact 'em again one on one if necessary.

Just fiddle around with it a bit, it shouldn't take too long for you to figure out what's what.
