Character
Name: Alphonse Elric
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Timeline: Episode 45; "The Promised Day"
Canon Resource Links: http://fma.wikia.com/wiki/Alphonse
Personality: The self-saddled burden that the Elric brothers carry is a pretty hefty one, but the one advantage that they have is the fact that they aren’t alone: They have one another, thanks entirely to Edward’s indomitable determination.

Alphonse differs from his brother in a lot of ways as far as personality goes, but they compliment one another instead of clashing. This is in thanks to training together for years as well as being close in age to start with. They've learned to work together fluidly, even seamlessly.

With only one year separating them if it weren’t for Alphonse’s armor body people might still mistake him for the older Elric at times. Why? Alphonse has always carried himself with more patience than his older brother. He’s easily the more mature one of the two when you look at things from that aspect. Incidentally this might be because he’s still naive in a way. Alphonse is compassionate and intuitive about people, and he’ll give pretty much anyone a chance and the benefit of the doubt, even if they’re enemies. He seemed to grow attached enough to the original Greed’s allies to want to protect them, even going so far as to try trapping one of them in his suit. He took it very hard he failed to prevent her death in spite of his best efforts, a trend that continues throughout the series.

As Brotherhood progresses Alphonse only grows stronger from these losses, becoming even more determined to see their goal to completion so that the sacrifices that the people they’ve met along the way don’t go to waste. He acts as the voice of reason to Ed's impulsiveness at times, reminding him that he's not expected to do everything on his own, that he wasn't the only one that made the choice to proceed with the forbidden transmutation that got them in the mess their in now. In fact, there are often times that they'll argue about their plans, particularly if they present Edward with needless risk, or if Alphonse feels he's being shielded. His fuse is extremely long, and so far as I can recall Edward is the only one that's ever seen him lose it, since Edward and Winry are always the ones to lose their tempers first on his behalf. He also proves that he's more than capable of fighting apart from Edward. Both are extremely intelligent, having studied together, but Alphonse generally tends to sort of let Ed take charge.

There’s one thing to note about the younger Elric that if you’re familiar with the series you already know. Having his soul bonded to a suit of armor was certainly his saving grace, but over the years it’s taken a heavy toll on him as well. One has to wonder if anyone else would have been able to take the psychological consequences, especially at such a young age as ten. It means that for the last five years Al has been unable to sleep, eat or taste, feel, smell, or cry, but he longs for the sensations of sleep and touch most of all he longs for a reprieve from the long and lonely nights. It's even harder for him because Edward is sleeping (and eating) enough for both of them. That means that Edward is sleeping more than a full night, more than likely, and during the day when he doesn't. When there are others to keep him company then this isn't so bad, but when there's no one else around to speak with is when he feels the weight of it all most. His mind never really stops...

Now, even though they've confirmed that he can return to his body there's yet another frightening complication. It seems as if his fears were founded, that his temporary body would eventually reject his soul due to their incompatibility. He's fearful that before he can even get his body back it will call him back to it. If that happens before it's pulled from the Gate then it's game over.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Intelligent: Like his brother Edward, Al has studied alchemy from a young age. He’s shown a passion for that and related subjects, so he’s got a wealth of knowledge on his side.

+ Skilled fighter: He trained with his brother under Izumi Curtis, so he’s highly skilled in martial arts. Even without his alchemy he would be a capable opponent with high endurance.

+ Patient: It takes a very, very long time or a lot to get Alphonse furious. He also gets points for being adorable when he's frustrated and flustered.

- Naive: Al can be too trusting at times, too eager to give others the benefit of the doubt. This isn’t always true, or even often, but there are plenty of canon examples of how easily tricked he can be.

- Frail body: He won’t be as emaciated as he is in canon at the point he’s pulled from, but Al will need to rest and eat to catch up on what he’s missed while being trapped in the Gate.

- Insecurity: For many reasons, though this weakness isn't really quite so apparent, and he improves on this as the series progresses. When number 66 suggests that Alphonse might be an artificial life form created entirely by his brother's design it was not number 66's argument that cemented the seed of doubt, but his own doubt and inner turmoil over his current state of being. He gains more confidence as Brotherhood goes, and eventually, at a point further ahead than I'm pulling him from, his trials forge more courage and certainty.

First Person Sample: --worry about it, Onix, we'll get it next time. We can't win them all, right?

[Yo, Johto! You caught Al in the middle of giving his starter a pep talk. They're coming away from a battle with another trainer that they didn't quite manage to win. It's not Onix's fault. In fact--]

Besides, you did great! Don't forget that he had us outnumbered by three! You're pretty much carrying the team right now... You don't have to do it all yourself.

He reminded him of his brother, honestly. He was constantly reminding Ed of this back in the "old" days. There must be something about him that just makes others feel like they need to take care of him. Maybe the same reason that he seemed so drawn to women, and the other way around. Well, in any case-- Al turns to the gear, which his Sentret is working. He just blinks, staring at the normal type calmly before opening his mouth to ask.] Hey, Sentret, when did you--

[The feed cuts off without any warning but the sound of a furry paw fussing over the microphone.]

Third Person Sample: (NEW THIRD PERSON SAMPLE)

To anyone passing by on the route that starry evening they would only catch sight of was the Onix curled around its trainer. Its rocky body formed a full circle, head to tail tip, its eyes closed. In the center, however, a Sentret slept bundled up against Alphonse’s side. The breeder lay gazing up at the stars overhead from where he rested atop his sleeping bag. He’d been on the road for a week already trying to catch up with his brother’s traveling party, but the pace was slower than it would have been if he was in top condition. They stopped for frequent rests, especially since Acanthite wasn’t that “old” yet.

Funny, though, camping out like that reminded him of so many different times in his life. There were the nights spent under the stars during their month of preliminary training, countless sleepless nights in his armor body, alone, and then there were nights that Edward would stay up with him still and the two would stargaze as they spoke. Now that he had his body back he was missing the company of his brother. It seemed, some of the time at least, that equivalent exchange ruled more than just alchemy. He lifted a hand towards the sky and stared at the back of it, at skin, covering muscles, layering over bones: A human hand. Millions of tiny cells that made up a complex nerve system that allowed him such simple pleasures as taste, sight, and sound as well. A small smile crossed his lips.

“I wonder, brother. When we go back home, if we get back home, will the return trip come at the cost of our memories here?”

Memories of having a flesh and blood body again, being able to taste, smell, feel, dream, and rest again, would all of those memories be the toll to be paid when he returned to his armor shell in Amestris? Somehow he already knew the answer to that, and he wondered if the thought had crossed Edward’s mind as well. As his hand lowered again he glanced to his pack where his Pokegear was sitting in easy reach. It wasn’t horribly late just yet, he could still call Edward to speak about it…

No. He thought, shutting his eyes, arms coming to rest under his head. Better to wait until they were face to face. It wouldn’t be much longer. He’d waited this long, he could wait a few more weeks.

(ORIGINAL FIRST PERSON SAMPLE)

Onix was far too big to relax out in the open, even in the gym. There were already plenty of people milled about, besides. Alphonse stood beside Winry and Edward, Katara’s friend—Aang –was there as well, not to mention several Pokemon already. How odd it felt not to be the biggest person in the group for a change, to feel the rush of air every now and again as a particularly strong attack sent a gust of it their way. It was strange to think how accustomed he’d become to his armored body. There were plenty of instances when he wondered if he'd ever return to his human form, especially after that scare with the sudden transitioning to and fro.

While it's true that Johto wasn't the fix that they wanted or planned for, it was at least a temporary one all the same.

It's been several weeks, and he's starting to look more like he should: Healthy, fed, toned, and not sickly.

The younger Elric owes this entirely to his brother. Since arriving in Johto and catching up with one another he’d made sure that Al was well fed and rested, not really letting him out of his sight. Katara was a friendly, helpful face too, and he’d been surprised to see the Colonel, now Major General there.

He stood to the side, observing one of Katara’s gym battles. Beside him stood Edward, clearly not content with standing on the sidelines. It didn’t take Al much to notice that his sibling was ready to start shouting advice, but they both knew Katara would throttle him if he tried. One of Alphonse’s hands simply came to rest on Ed’s shoulder with an amused look that seemed to be laughing nervously.
Really (.), if he didn’t know better he’d swear that Ed just liked them violent and independent, (Who was Alphonse to talk anyway?) as the younger brother it was his OBLIGATION to tease his elder every now and then, right?

“Brother, you should relax. She can handle it.” A pause, amused, and he added. “Besides, if she doesn’t strangle you for interrupting you know Winry probably will. Better leave this one to her…”
